Not the boutique hotel experience we thought we were getting

The room was clean, however out experience wasn’t the same quality we have enjoyed in the past. The staff wasn’t as helpful when we had issues and things just weren’t up to snuff. The inroom coffee maker never did work right and when we asked about it, the staff didn’t take us seriously. We were rushed out before checkout time, with the maid trying to come in several hours before we had even gotten up. Our tv never did work right either and a staff member was sent up who told us that he couldn’t help the situation. We ate at lockbox and it was ok. The food was good, but the service and experience were lack luster. As far as a boutique hotel experience, they missed the mark for us.

As seasoned 21c loyalists, we have come to expect a particular level of service and experience from the brand. This was our 16th visit to a 21c property and 4th time visiting our hometown location in Lexington, KY. The overall experience was a mixture of what we have come to love about the brand and some disappointments. Disappointments started hours before we arrived at the hotel. Given it was Tuesday, we hoped for the possibility for an early check-in. When we called, Delaney (sp?) told us it was first come first served for early check-in. When we arrived at 12:30 PM, we informed that no rooms were available, but she took our number and said we would be contacted as soon as a room became available. When we checked back in at 2:00 PM, we were told there were still no rooms available. When we returned to the desk at 3:15 PM, there were additional employees who checked and told us our room was available. We mentioned that we were expecting a call, we were told "we have been very busy checking in a lot of other guests and at least we got you in now." While we understand an early check-in is not guaranteed, we expected more communication and information than we were given. Once in the room, we were met with additional disappointments. All the toiletry containers were near empty and ran out before we left the next day. When we went to make coffee, one of the water bottles had a missing seal and was half empty. The water reservoir in the coffee maker contained water of a questionable age and origin. The highlight of the visit was our Lockbox bartender Shaun (sp?) who turned a lackluster check-in experience into a wonderful mid-day libation and meal. He greeted us enthusiastically, recommending a craft cocktail from the menu and letting us know what food options were available from the kitchen. He engaged us in conversation and was very in-tune with our energy, providing a much-needed turnaround in our initial experience.

Unfortunately, this visit wasn't as good as others - I love the brand, the concept, the art and the restaurants. Although the staff rectified everything on site and I want to commend them for their quick responses and making everything right for me - it would be important to note that the rooms are in need of some preventative maintenance and attention to detail. My fire alarm (and apparently only my fire alarm, went off at night - resulting in having it removed - and the piercing scream was quite unsettling). Finally the unit was disconnected and I was able to get some rest before my presentation the following day. I also look forward to having a cup of expresso - however, the outlet behind the frig didn't seem to be working - I was able to relocate the Nescafe unit and use it - but not ideal. From a "deep clean" perspective, furniture, carpet, air registers, and the center light in the room needed attention. I stayed in the Lexington location a couple of years ago and in comparison the accommodations had really declined. The restaurant had great food and the art exhibits were much enjoyed. It would seem that a preventative maintenance program may do the trick. The spaces need some TLC. When I am working in new locations, I always keep your brand in mind, as many secondary cities would benefit from the model and the community engagement that you have created.

Overall we had a good experience. I wished you have a coffee available at the lobby in case the coffee in the room wasn't a match for everyone. Courtesy coffee should be a plus. But overall was great.

Overall, my stay was nice. Staff was courteous and building felt secure. Parking was not clearly communicated--with a valet being suggested and other parking options explained. There were only two spaces to unload out front, and we had to circle multiple times before we could park to unload. The room was spacious and comfortable. My room had discolored spots on the carpet from either age or stains. The bathroom was enormous. One of my towels and one of my wash cloths had spots/stains on each. Since I was not staying long, I simply used the other provided towel and wash cloth. The air conditioning return was extremely loud, but the temperature was easily controlled and comfortable. The restaurant was good, but service was very slow. For the price point of the hotel, I guess I just expected more.
